The CMOS battery in a computer is required for the computer to remember the date, if the battery goes flat the computer will keep losing the date. Many CMOS batteries are regular coin cell batteries and can be purchased easily, some however have leads soldered onto them which makes the job much more difficult.  DO NOT TRY AND SOLDER THE LEADS ONTO THE BATTERY AS THEY CAN EXPLODE! This video shows how to convert a regular coin battery into a CMOS battery with leads.
