Sanders are often used by DIY enthusiasts and are extremely versatile and useful. Small sanders can be picked up very reasonably whereas a large floor sander could cost £1400.00, obviously purchasing one for this price is not economical, Hire shops can be very useful here as you can often hire them for the weekend!

Bench sander

Bench sanders are used not just for sanding but for shaping as well, these machines are powerful and make easy work of rapid removal of material from the work piece.

Belt sander

Belt sanders remove material very effectively and can make light work of sanding, care must be taken as sanding marks could be left if for example wood was sanded against the grain! Belt sanders can be fixed in a work mate or similar to be used as a bench sander.

Cordless sander

At last a cordless sander has been developed, Bosch have made this cordless sander which can be taken anywhere with out having to worry about power or the trailing cord. This is much the same as a detail sander only it is cordless and so you can use it anywhere. Having never used one I can not say how long the battery lasts. The battery is a prio Lithium-Ion battery which can be charged to 80% in 30 mins!

Detail sander

Detail sanders do exactly what their name implies. Although rapid removal of material is very unlikely these machines are extremely useful for small sanding jobs such as sanding around window frames or sanding small items and furniture. Their pointed shaped base plate makes them fantastic for sanding in corners where other types of sander would not reach.

Floor sander

A floor sander is not something that you would normally buy as they are extremely expensive, There are basically two types- the large drum machine which is used stood up and the edging sander for going around the edges of the room. Most good hire shops stock these as they are very popular for renovating old wood floors.

Edging sander

The large drum sander normally accepts full size sheets of sand paper which are wrapped around the drum, this sander is normally used first. The smaller edging sander is used last and contains a orbiting disk.

Orbital sander

Orbital sanders come in several different sizes which are normally 1/2 sheet, 1/3 sheet or 1/4 sheet. This means that a half sheet sander uses half of a full sheet of regular sandpaper. Versions are also available with round base plates that use special disks as opposed to regular sand paper.
