How far can fuse box be from meter?
my daughters 1978 house needs rewiring.
How far can the new fuse box be from the electric meter?
We want it to be perhaps 3 or 4 meters away so it is out of the way whilst still being easily accessible.
thank you glassescase

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.

Re: How far can fuse box be from meter?
if its in the 2-3m range you may need to go up to 25mm tails rather the 16mm - Unless you fit a isolator with in 3m of the meter and run a suitable cable (iirc swa or mineral cable if it complies still)

Re: How far can fuse box be from meter?
Just looked it up
4.6 Meter Tails
Standard 25mm2 copper double-insulated conductors (meter tails) from the meter to the cut-out shall be provided and installed by the appointed meter operator.
Standard 25mm2 copper double-insulated conductors shall be provided and installed by the customer from the consumer unit for connection by the meter operator into the outgoing (load side) of the meter.
BS 7671 Regulation 433.2.2 allows a maximum distance of three metres between overload protection devices and their source, therefore the customer shall provide and install an intermediate switch fuse or isolating switch if the distance between the meter and consumer unit is greater than three metres.
The customer should seek professional electrical advice to determine the protection equipment that is appropriate for the customer given the impedance at the cut-out and the design of their installation as UK Power Networks is unable to advise on these aspects.
Meter tails shall not be installed or run inside the cavity wall of a building other than passing directly through the wall.
Tri-rated cables shall not be terminated onto UK Power Networks equipment.

Re: How far can fuse box be from meter?
Many flats have the meters near entrance and consumer unit in flat up the stairs, however there is normally a limit of 3 meters when using standard tails. However moving a consumer unit would need notifying so down to electrician or inspector what you can have.

Re: How far can fuse box be from meter?
thank you I will be using a professional to go from meter to fuse box. 3m is plenty.
There are two sets of tails, one to the fuse box and another set to a single fuse/isolator for the shower.
thank you for the advice, it is appreciated

That will be 3 metres and not 3 meters (unless it is 3 phase supply)
