New doorway.....what space to leave?

Post by ali »

I've just built a new stud wall and need to leave space for a door. If the door is 610mm and the lining is 20mm each side, that's 650mm but I must have to leave extra space either side? I want the door to fit snugly and not have more gap than is actually needed so how much should I leave between the studs in total?

I'm not fitting the door but I am doing everything else.

Be grateful for advice.

Leave a opening of 660mm.
This will allow the frame to to be made plumb and level if the stud work is out slightly. Pack out with plywood or packers and fix with 8 srews per jamb.

"....if the stud work is out slightly"................

You wouldn't be saying that if you'd seen just how long I stood there with a full length spirit level. On each stud......and on each face on each stud.

Lol...don't worry, I know that. Just messing with you.

10mm out though?????

The opening for my door measures EXACTLY the same all the way from top to bottom, it's as straight as a die and the top jamb is perfectly square. In fact, I'm so proud of it, I think I'll go take a pic and post it on the show case gallery board.
