Hi,
In need of some help again!! I want to make 2 floating shelfs from white contiboard. I'm aware you can buy the kits, but they're not long enough for what I need. Both need to be 2400mm in length. I'm unsure of the weight they would need to take, but they're for my son's room and would be for books, board games etc. If I can help it I would rather not have any screws visable on the underside or facia.
If anybody can advise me I would be very grateful.
Many thanks,
Gurkin

Floating shelves are usually supported by some stud bar resin fixed in the wall. The shelf has two carefully drilled holes to marry up with the studs. You can make the shelf units up out of laminated MDF and gluing up three boards allows you to create the slots for the bars to avoid drilling.
Bit of painting to do but will do teh job and look okay. Put in more studs the longer the shelf to avoid bowing. One every foot or so I would say.

Thanks for your reply. The only available store I have is B & Q ( I live on an island) and I can't find "stud bar resin", could you point me in the right direction. Or have I got it wrong and your saying glue three boards together fix to wall and use that instead of the stud bar resin. Sorry!

Would suggest the same as DWD use M12 threaded studding drilled into
the wall and fixed with resin (Anchor Fix is the name of one product)
To make the shelves lighter make a timber fame out of 32mm x 32mm
planned softwood, drill the holes for the studding and put a skin of 6mm
MDF top and bottom
For timber stud walls find the vertical studs and fix the M12 studding with
gripfil drill the holes at least 75mm deep

There would be less trouble in the world
