ok not quite when i started more off a cut out tool
http://www.toolup.com/dewalt/dc550b.html
anyway the 550 naked was only £40 an unbelivable bargain brand new american import but from a uk company it was cheap because the 1/4" collet was missing
now i need a cut out tool like i need a hole in the head but but but
it looks like it has a standard 43mm collar that will match my old nackerd ferm router base with a 43mm collar
ok to cut a long story short removed the collet locking mechanism removed the inners
working on one half at a time removed any plastic sticking out from the ring at right angles with a stanley knife
using a bench sander removed the rim by rotating in a rocking motion to take it back to the collar
eventualy the rim was removed all bumps where carefully lined up to the collar as round smooth and even as possible
now at this stage the base collar is approximatly 1.5mm smaller than the body 2 choices remove 2mm from the metal base or 1.5 from the body
body lost now it the plastic is very chuncky round the neck with ribs and a ball bearing thats half the depth of the collar so as you tighten the collar it tightens on the bearing evenly all round
now its not an ideal set up as i have used the collet from my 18v ryobi laminate light router [600]again an import
the cutter is held very solidly but with 2/3 shaft exposed like the ryobi is un nerving but it happily cuts a 9mm by 9mm rebate easily
i now await a propper test to do lots of various moldings to see if it chatters and works loose or wear out because the loads are different on a router compared to a cut out tool

as you might imagine its top heavy and rather long at around twice the length of the ryobi and too bulky for one hand operation unlike the ryobi
