building wooden porch
hey guys
as you can see from pics my porch is quite rotten and would like to replace with new wooden porch.
i am competent with diy and my father in law who may be lending a hand is more than competent.
what i am wondering is will this be a feasable project for someone who is not a pro? also does anyone know of any reference material for such a project?

porch is 6.5ft by 3ft and 8.5ft tall. also here is a pic of the roof joiner.
again not the best pic( not too sure how to get larger pics on here).
i will hopefully be changing the style of the roof, something very similar to one of the posts i have seen on this site.

Assuming you are going to keep the porch the same size to fit to the existing base, you would be best off having a look at some new doors first.
Reason being is once you have seen what you can buy off the shelf. i.e size, style etc. You can then work out what you want to do with your frames.
If you measure your base and you decide you are going to fit a pair of 2'6"/762mm wide doors (it looks like what is fitted at present) you will then be able to work out what size material is needed to make up the frames. You can then repeat this for the side too.
Looking at the side view you will probably be able to buy a complete door frame the correct size to fit straight in.
The suggestions given are based upon timber construction, if you are planning on replacing with upvc then these guidelines will still work, however it would be worth a visit to someone who deals with upvc to talk over your options.
Tip: Draw out a full size plan view of how you want your porch to look, it will make the job of selecting materials alot easier when you're ready to start building.
Best of luck!!

thx for that griffin, had a guy round the other day who tried to sell me a pvc wood effect porch for just over 6 grand.
or real wood for just under 10 grand.
are these crazy prices by desperate company?
anyhow i think i will definitely be having a go at it myself when i get some time to get it all sorted.
thx for tip on choosing doors first i was concentrating on framework in my head, could have been a big mistake
