impact driver or impact wrench

Post by amarg »

Hi, I am thinking of buying an impact driver or impact wrench, but I am not sure what the difference is, or which would be best. Any advice would be welcome?

Hi Brian

Wrenches take mechanics sockets. 1/2 inch square drive!
Drivers take 1/4 inch hex bits (screwdriver bits etc)!

You'll also find that wrenches by nature deliver higher torque for removing nuts and bolts.

Thanks for the fast reply Carhartt

I thik I'll opt for the wrench as it will be more versatile, as it would be hard to use sockets with a driver, but easy to use the hex driver bits with the wrench one using the correct adaptors.

Thanks again :thumbright:

As mentioned, the drivers generally 1/4" hex, wrenches generally 1/2" sq
You could use a 1/2"sq adaptor for screwdriver bits, but id be inclined to get the driver, unless your doing mostly nuts and bolts. You could end up with a bit to much torque and break a lot of screws.
You can get decent 1/4"hex to 1/2" or 3/8" adaptors... thats what i use in mine, with a set of 3/8" impact sockets.

Thats ok mate. I'd go the other way round though. Impact driver!! I use a socket driver set with my impact driver. They work fine with my socket set!
