Artex, bloody Artex!

I have foolishly volunteered to redecorate my mother-in-laws bathroom for her. However, there is artex on 3 of the 4 walls as well as the ceiling. the whole room needs tiling (painted celing) but I obviously need to remove the artex first.

Does anybody know how? I believe some types of artex may contain asbestos so chisel is out of the question? I know its water based so would a wall paper steamer do it or do I need to render/board/paint some sort of adhesive over it?

Seen as your tiling over it you could remove the brunt of it with a tungsten carbide scraper - just mask up.

WEAR A MASK as artex up to early 90s MAY contain asbestos (oops just re read your post) your allowed to remove it but you need to have it disposed of by pros if it does! I usually use a sharp bladed scraper (with the removeable blade)! to knock it back then PVA and skim over with multifinish before tiling!

I used a steamer and it worked a treat,especially if it contains chrysotile,it keeps it wet therefore no airbourne fibres

But use a mask anyways
