Levelling over bitumen floor

Post by tommo »

Hi, Recently used levelling compound on bitumen painted floor. This was inteded as preparation for tiling. Unfortunately despite using PVA the compound started to show crack lines and gives hollow sound when you knock on it (in some places). Shall I not worry about that and carry on with tiling over it or redo the levelling? If redoing, what's the best way. Thanks, Tom

Just been on the phone with BAL technical help. They say the only way is to remove the bitumen which would guaratee adhesion. My question is then what's the best way to remove bitumen? Thanks

Bitumen can normally be melted using a solvent. Perhaps you could try white spirits or similar?

I have tried with the white spirit and I could get at least the black layer off. With some bitumen left in the pores will the levelling compound stick to that now you think? Could anyone advise from their experience? Thanks
