transfer files

Post by brushstrokes »

hi..
I changed my harddrive because it was infected with a virus due to opening a dodgy e-mail... I have files on the effected harddrive that i need to transfere on disc, write files and mainly my pictures of my daughter, tryed last night to transfere to disc. it showed the files being transfered but no responce from disc drive. ( no communication ) so no success. any ideas how i can do this if possible, and how i can clear the effected hard drive from the virus... any suggestions would be great

Thanks... kenny

Do I take it that you have fitted the new harddrive to your computer as the Master drive and are now using your old drive as a slave by moving the plug in link? Also I suspect that you then put your operating system (WinXP?) on your new drive?

Using Windows Explorer on your new drive C should allow you to view your 'My documents' folder on your old drive (D?). If you can, to start with, try copying your files onto one or more memory sticks plugged into a USB socket on your computer.

I'll give more suggestions after you have replied as I don't want to baffle you with too much information.

OK
On your old computer,
1. Can you see you’re ‘My Documents’ files using windows explorer?
2. If you can, open the file and copy and paste some of the contents onto a memory stick plugged into a USB port if you have one.

If you know what the virus is can you not clean it, otherwise you could transfer the virus to the new machine

scruff is right, if you do manage to transfer any of your old files onto disc or memory do not load them onto your new computer without testing them first.

With trojans, as you can spend ages trying to get rid of them, I find it best to first of all try to recover any important files. Then make sure that I have a servicable recovery disk or operating system available.

What I then do is re-format drive C and re-instal the operating system on C. This will however destroy everything on C.

If you are lucky you might find your 'My Documents' folder on drive D which may not be infected and therefore usable.

If you are not skilled in computer repairs, it is often possible to find a small computer repair shop to do the job for you. The PC World helpdesk can sometimes help out too. (Ask the price first.)

Other forum members may give yiu better advice however.
