Regulations for fire doors - any advice?

Post by trumpetmonkey »

I've been asked to replace some rotten fire exit doors for my church. They are double doors, exiting from a hall, and they come out under a metal fire escape stair. (I guess that's why they need to be fire rated doors?)

The opening is 1120mm wide by 2000mm high. The double doors are equal widths, with a push bar on each one, allowing both to come open easily.

They have bought the replacement doors already. They are the narrowest they could get but I still need to take about 200mm off each one.

They are fire-rated doors - not solid hardwood, but hardwood edges and structure, with probably some sort of wood-fibre in-fill, and plywood faced.

So, when I cut them down, I will be cutting through the structure of the door, and I will have to reattach a hardwood edge strip.

Does anyone know about the regulations regarding all this? Want to make sure I do it right, to comply with fire regs. I understand there might also be a minimum width for a fire door so I might have to have one wider than the other? (But they want me to keep it the same so I can re-use the existing bars.)

I don't suppose this helps-

fire-proof-door-fitting-t13711.html

There are a few people on here that will know, but they are not here yet

Fire Doors

Post by frontman »

Tricky one this, fire doors on public buildings, especialy non-standard sizes & fittings may have to be OK'd by the council fire regulation folk.
What tends to happen is that while the old doors are in place and working as a fire exit all is OK, as soon as there are any changes made they need to be up to modern specs and cutting a fire door can be a non starter.
Things to consider are;
Hinges (qty size and position)
Intumescent srtips FD30(S) FD60(S) FD=firedoor 30/60 mins S=smoke
Door Closers have to have the correct pull for the size/weight of door

Problem with all this is that it depends totaly on the person who does the checking, hopefully the bloke will come round and say sawing is ok rather than have a pair of doors made to measure.

Good luck

Think you will find that the doors you have if standard size and fire rated
will be no good as you are only allowed to trim them by MM not CM

What l think you need to get are fire check blanks unlike a standard door
made up of wooden frame and infilled with other materials they are solid
timber all the way through so can be cut to any size and then have to be
lipped with hardwood edgeing
There would be less trouble in the world
if l had not had six daughters
