hanging doors and carpet clearence

Post by sentinal73 »

Hi all,

I'm gutting a few rooms in my house, have hung a door myself but now need to order the carpet for the room

Should i trim the door before i get a carpet fitted? How much should i cut off the bottom of he door for the carpet clearance? or should i get the carpets fitted and then trim the door to suit? though obviously wont be able to hang the door and measure how much needs to be trimmed off

thanks

if the door is hung already,
remove door.
fit carpet.
measure from carpet to bottom of hinge rebate on frame.
take same measure on door to bottom of hinge.
cut off the difference!
hang door (plane off if nessecary).

i thought about doing it that way, was hoping i could do it before the carpet is fitted, they are pine doors and would like to varnish them, from a time point of view, woud be easier to varnish them now, but didnt want to trim them after they had been varnished

Same advice as Marc1106.

I always fit brass rising butt hinges to lift doors clear of carpets and they normally self close.

leave em bare for now WAIT till carpets down then trim to fit make sure they are how you want them closing.
THEN remove them and all hardware then varnish(away from new carpet)
then refit and hang.

There is no quick fix that gives a good result. (just tell the missus that when shes bleating on about doors not being finished)

Hang the door, using a small piece of wood scribe a line 16mm from the
floor onto the bottom of the door with the door closed and also when fully
open as floor levels may differ

Take the door off trim the door to the furthest scribed line, rehang the
door and varnish

Try the door using a sample of carpet and underlay, trim the door a bit
more if necessary
There would be less trouble in the world
if l had not had six daughters
