We have moved into a rented property where there is a burn mark in the solid wood worktop. I have also accidently put a pan on the worktop for a second and it has burnt it in another spot, i sanded the areas down and put a clear varnish on it but the colour doent match and the varnish stands out shinny against the rest of the work top, i was hoping that i wouldnt have to sand the entire worktop back. Im sure the worktop is varnished, any advise would be appreciated. I am having trouble uploading pictures on the forum.
Are you sure the worktop is varnished? It sounds from your description that it may be oiled, not varnished and that would account for the difference in look and texture.

Advise rhymes with rise. Advice rhymes with rice.
As its a Beech Block worktop, i'd agree with Geewizz and say its probably oiled!
I'd sand the patched back again and tray adding a few drops of darker varnish to the varnish you're using. A little pot should only be a few pounds! Or, get a oil that matches and just keep adding a little more till the depth of colour matches. To get rid of the shine, you can give it a little rub with some new wire wool. Really fine grade stuff!
Anyways, if you're really a surf chick, cool, and welcome to the forum. Its dead handy!!! Surf wise, charts look sick for the week ahead. Forget the worktop and go get wet instead! Monday on is gonna be pumpin!!! Just hope Weds hold up to the predictions!!!
