asinine: thats a pretty funny mental image, someone sitting blackened from the explosion with a speech bubble "but i only turned it on"
@the scruff: it was just an example, games on the whole should be harder to get working with linux due to directX etc, however games publishers seem to be coming round to coding in stuff so wine can run it

Go along with Scruff on the subject of games. If I wanna play games I use the PS2 or XBOX or whatever.
Oddly I use my Apple along with OSX as a Computer and that is the way it will stay as I do not judge a computer by what games I can play on it, I judge it by its reliability to do a job - and Windoze is pretty bad at doing that reliably.

Thing is the same games on the PC have more content and more potential for graphics superiority than their counterpart consoles and some games just can't be played on consoles, for example, World of Warcraft.IDontBelieveIt wrote:Go along with Scruff on the subject of games. (don't judge me on my love of the geekiest game ever invented, lol!

Games will always be far superior on a high end PC's than a dedicated games console and monitors are a higher resolution than a TV but of course there is a vast vast difference in price. Most half decent graphics cards are dearer than the games console itself.
18months so ago I bought 2 radeon 1950 xtx to run Crysis as it was the only one that could run at 2560 resolution on a 30" Dell monitor.
The game was really impressive but cost me a packet! Not worth an toss now
Monitor was well worth it though, doubles up as a TV
Never getting into World of Warcraft, I have seem what that does to guys

ATIs are nice though I would have went with a pair of Nvidia 8800s
brother is running a 640MB GTS and its doing not bad powering a 24 inch 1920x1080 TFT.
Frame rates are smooth on everything he plays.

Yeah it was more of a case that I have bought one and happened to support cross fire so got another
Pair of Nvidia 8800, that would cost a bit

yeah werent cheap when new. Think brothers card was £200 - £300 (most expensive part of the machine)
im still running an X1800 GTO, does what I need it to.
Though considering a Core i7 based system once I can get the cash together.

You should try the 3DMark test to see how yours compares. The ATI 4870 CF seems to top the mark at the moment

I play games on Linux. There are quite a few of them but it does tend to reduce the number compared to windoze I suppose. I play Enemy Territory and Nexuiz mainly as well as the old tomb raider ones under wine. I suppose it's a bit of a toss up between having an operating system that works properly and not having so many games or vice versa.
I suppose if I were that bothered Id get a games console but it's not a huge part of my life.
The idea of having a second rate operating system that's full of bugs, (well, one's too many isn't it, if you've got it :D), and has hundreds of thousands of viruses just so I can play the odd game or two that doesn't run under wine, virtualbox or for which there isn't a linux version, just seems plain daft to me.
