I-Tunes query

Post by Pristineplastering »

Hi, can anyone help a completely inept plasterer try and restore his music collection - My I-Tunes collection I have saved on a back up disc - When I play songs on I-Tunes, although all the songs are listed in the library, they wont play unless the back up disc is inserted in the hard drive - Am I making sense ??

Its as if I need to somehow import everything on the disc into I-tunes

Basically, I want all the music to correspond with the listings and not have to rely on keep putting the back up disc in every time I want to listen to music

I'm sure its quite a simple task, but look at my log in name - I'm a plasterer not a technofile - Please help, much appreciated

Sounds like you need to import them back into Itunes. Copy the lot into your Itunes.

bit of clarification needed ....

You saved your iTunes collection on a backup disk - are they still on the hard drive as well?
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?"
She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

File/Import choose file. Or file/add to library the choose. Ctrl to select more than one file at a time, just keep it held down.

Thats the easiest way to do it if you don't know very much.

If the files are in the place they used to be in, there could be a much quicker and easier way

C:\Documents and Settings\louise\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music

This is your music folder that can be found from your preference options under the advanced tab. That folder wouldn't change if you did a back up .

It can change by itself without you meaning to to that default.

I have my iTunes on an "M:" drive which is accessed via the network. If I load iTunes up and the M: is not accessible for any reason, the folder gets reset to the kind of default you posted.
After thaty happens, the tracks are all listed as normal, but if I select one, iTunes says it cannot be found (as it is not in the location specified in preferences)
the OP may have a similar scenario?

I assumed that since he/she didn't know very much about computers then networking wouldn't come into it hence the location staying the same

Simple route is often the best...

hence the reason for asking a particular question earlier without going down a "this is the location ....." path

Sorry guys, been out walking the dog - thanks for all your help so far - The message that comes up when I click on a tune to play is " The song XXX cannot be used because the original found cannot be found. Would you like to locate it ? "

Your files have been deleted from the above location I posted. You need to do an import from your cd or copy the files back to that location then no need to go through locatng file after file.

OK, that I understand - So I've got the H drive files all visible on screen and the C location, Docs, Music, Itunes, Itunes Music etc...

I've copied and pasted a couple of test songs from the H drive files and pasted into the C location - Then when I go to play the song in I tunes I get the same message - However this time when I click yes and ask to locate it, when it finds it, it will play without the disk being inserted - However, I have over 3000 songs on the disk and it will be a bit ball aching to go through this procedure for each and every one - I'm sure i'm missing something... ??

You need to know what the original location of the music files were in the first place, the location I posted was the default location.

The best thing to do would be to use the restore feature when you insert your backup cd.

1.Open Itunes
2. Insert cd
3. Itunes will ask if you want to restore etc.

Try that
