Dear All,
I have this pc Sony workstation. I need to know how to make it wireless, so i will need to know which part to buy to make it compatable to the signal of the wireless broadband.

Where i can i buy this Wirless cartridge for the sony computer.

I am thinking of buying the 02 broadband, as it will come with the wireless.

don't know the specifics about your PC, but if it doesn't have built-in wi-fi (check this - it is quite likely), then the best bet is a USB wi-fi dongle - about £30 or so and just plugs into a USB port then follow the instructions that come with it - nice and easy

green tape has been there since when i bought the sony workstation, as it may be transit tape.

Personal Computer Memory Card International Association, but on the computer it says PC CARD.

can you get pc card which a wireless card will go in this slot and then the computer will become wireless.

The reason i need to do this, so my neighbour can pick the signal up, as i will be signing up with 02 broadband.

Is 8 meg would this enough, as i wont be downloading much.

PCMCIA Card/ pc card ..same thing as far as your concerned

if you only need wireless for your Neighbour then no point in buying a wireless card for you ,just hard wire yours then your neighbour can pick up wireless off the router (hope he/she is paying for it

) but dont forget to set the security on it otherwise half the street will get it as well

8meg is more than enough for you if your not downloading much ,then again 8meg would probably be enough anyway ..BUT the thing to watch is it says UP TO 8meg ,now that could mean anything from dial up speed to 8meg depends how far away from the exchange you are ,hence subject to location

Foggy's right, the 8meg is sometimes way off. As it goes I only get 0.5meg on an upto 8meg service and it's driving me crazy. You can check what you should be recieving by endering your post code into http://www.btbroadbandinformation.com/b ... de-checker

One thing to consider when sharing your broadband connection is the type of usage from other users connected to the network. For example, if you neighbour downloads large files such as movies you will end with very little bandwidth left for browsing while they are downloading large files or streaming video at high speeds browsing the web will be slow as hell (visa-versa) - just something to keep in mind. I'm not all that clued up on routers though, perhaps you can allocated a % bandwidth per user

Just a side note for your protection - be careful where you post images of your Product Key as anyone can install a pirate copy of widnows and register with it.

FYI, PCMCIA is 16 bit/ PC Card is 32 Bit - you can see the difference usually as the PCMCIA is Silver coloured connections and the PC Card is typically Gold with little 'bobbles' for earthing
Like Foggy says though, same difference for your purpose. Just posted this info as I happen to know it

You ask if 8 meg is enough - that question says to me you are not 100% sure about broadband, so just in case ....

the 8 meg you mentioned is about Download speed I presume and as already replied, you are unlikely to get 8 Meg - the postcode checker MJA posted will tell you what is more likely could be anywhere between 512k and 4MB most likely
if it is just you and your neighbour with one PC each, then sharing a connection between the two of you is like having two PCs in the same house - I have 4 PCs or more all connected and my BB connection (around 2 Meg) is fine for all.

What I would be more concerned about if I were you is broadband download limits.
For the price you quoted from O2, I would expect there to be a limit after which you will get charged extra, cut off or the speed throttled right back - I suggest you check what this limit is and also check what the neightbour intends using "his" connection for.
If you post back what the limit is and the kind of things you and he will be using the internet for, we can advise if that limit could be an issue or not.

If its O2's LLU service then they have a loose fair use policy, which hasnt really been used. Its more of the big stick to keep others in line.

I wanted Be* but they dont seem to have any idea when they plan to enable my exchange so I went with UKonline (Same network as Sky LLU - easynet) not cheap at £24.99 but speeds good and tech support ok. Plus I use my net connection a lot so having 24/7 tech support is good also. Plus they have a SLA which is nice also.

Still would have liked O2 / Be though, oh well cant win them all.

I will be using the internet for e-mails for work. My wife may be browsing for shopping clothes and looking at showbiz.

My son may download games or he can browse and i can download it from work.

Next door which is my parents house, they might be just browsing and e-mailing.

I think that is managable if your parents aren't constantly browsing - however it might be frustrating for them if you are, lol.

Put it this way, I'd be well chuffed to get that speed, it's kicks my 0.4Mbps into touch without even being on ADSL Max.
