Freshly sealed lip on bath sends water onto the floor!

Post by robreun »

Hi,

I've recently had some tiling done in my bathroom and I took the opportunity to replace the bathroom furniture. Unfortunately a minor planning flaw has come to light since the job was finished: there is a lip at the end of the bath (under a power shower.. sigh) which gathers water from the shower and sends puddles onto the floor.

To try and stop this from happening I've tried all kinds of sealant-based ideas; I've tried some sealing strips but they haven't really achieved anything other than to send the water onto the floor even more. So much water pools that it always seems to find its way through icon_sad.gif A friend suggested some kind of custom-built platform to change the height of the area between the lip and the wall to be higher than the lip all around, and set it at an angle as well to send the water back into the bath. Not sure what I could build it out of - treated timber with some custom-cut tiles on top and then sealed? Neoprene or something else water-resistant?

I'm a bit sick and tired of this problem now, the bathroom was replaced to deal with major water damage so I am going to make damn sure the same problem doesn't come back. Replacing the bath with one with a flat or bevelled edge is certainly an option, but it's one I'd rather not do - all the tilework etc was completed specifically to fit around the bath that's in. I even built a box at the other end, custom fitted to the end of that bath, so I really don't want to have to go through all that again.

Does anybody have any ideas as to what I could do to solve the problem? Apologies if this should go in general DIY.

Links to pics below - can't figure out how to make them inline.

I can see the problem.

Is there a shower curtain that goes across?

a fixed glass screen would sort it........you get short ones, mabye 300-500mm would do it? I presume the lip goes further down the bath?

I was thinking that

I once bought a shell bath from B&Q and that has a raised shell shaped edge that was causing the same problem. A glass shower screen was used to replace the curtain and it fixed the problem.

It looks like the lip dissappears further down the bath, judging by the pictures.

Whilst a shower screen would stop the problem of water gushing down the side............your always going to have to mop up the puddles from behind the raised head of the bath.

Otherwise you will have endless problems with silicon & grout going manky, due to constant contact with water

As you are finding out...........baths with raised lips are not the best kind to fit showers  :thumbright:

Also......that shower seems a bit on the low side for my liking. Unless your a family of ickle people

Not meant to have a shower, pure and simple. ::b

And in any case you seem to have the bath the wrong way round.

Thanks all for suggestions. I'll give it a go with the shower screen and if that doesn't work I'll change the bath.
