Hotel Star Ratings
Does any one know where I can find the criteria required for hotels to achieve the star ratings ? or is it one of those closely gaurded secrets where the governing body hands out ratings to the highest bidder

Found that, but thanks
Typically having done a google search I couldn't find anything which is why I posted here. Went back to search again and found it straight away
This doesn't appear to be an 'official' star rating more a 'this is the guidelines'.
The reason I ask is whether a 4* hotel should be able to serve pre-prepared food that is made off site and is the same across the whole chain a-la Little Chef is doing - which is OK as its a greasy spoon, selling at a reasonable price

According to www.britainexpress.com this is the definition of a 4* hotel
More formal service is expected at this level. Accommodation is of a very high standard, offering a wide range of facilities and services. All bedrooms will be designed and furnished for comfort and ease of use, with very good quality furniture, beds and soft furnishings. All rooms will have en-suite bath and shower facilities.
Service will reflect attention to detail and quality. There must be a formal reception and porters’ desks with uniformed staff offering a proactive style of service. The restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner seven days per week. Serious attention is paid to food and drink. Table service is available in the bar or lounge. Cooked and continental breakfast available, cold snacks and beverages available from Room Service 24 hours per day.
Where leisure facilities are provided these will be of a high quality, very well maintained and supervised as appropriate.
Having lived in the Crowne Plaza for the last 4 months I'm seriously questioning how they get to keep their 4* rating and how/who I complain to
