With any tiling, always work out how your edge will be first. The exposed edges of the tiles may not look good.

I would use Inch WBP plywood because it is less likely to bend than anything else. For adhesive, mix your own and choose a suitable one from a proper tile supplier.

Have you looked at the price of granite worktops recently, it is more affordable than it used to be.

Tiles

I can see your idea here although im not convinced.

Yes it would be cheaper coming in around £35+ per m2 for tiles rather than your £200 plus.

Not to mention how cheap it would look, i know a company that supply 1cm thick granite worktops that go over your existing ones.

I also had a customer last year who came by our yard every 2 weeks or so and collected are off cuts at a tenner a piece and had joints all over the place :-)
He brought by a pic after he had finished and it actually looked quite good! (well it would of if he had'nt had 2 different black colours, one black and the other gold black and in that order around  )

we tiled a marble one for a customer last year, wasn't convinced until we finished & looked great. Not sure about granite but can't see the end result being any different.

One thing to look out for is sealants & grouts due to it being a food prep area.

Blockboards are best. I saw mine being done by the ********* workmen. Lot of expertise involved.
