Reclaimed Quarry tiles and removing the adhesive adhesive

Post by allintheprep »

I was meant to be relaying some loose quarry tiles for a customer in their porch that had come loose. I went to remove them and found that nothing was really supporting them over the floor void apart from some crumbly adhesive.

Now having removed a bigger section, I've battened and boarded the area to make it solid using 12mm WBP ply. But before I lay the tiles I need to remove the adhesive without damaging the tiles. Any ideas?

It depends on the adhesive used. If it's a polymer then you could try different solvents. If it's a non-polymer adhesive then you can try using steam to soften it first. generally though, the best method is to get a blade in between the back of the tile and the adhesive and chisel away at it.

By coincidence, I just lifted a load of quarry tiles today. I took one look at the back of the first one and decided that they weren't worth trying to save. They've been condemned to be taken from this place and skipped.

Best way is to use a 4 inch angle grinder with a cupped diamond disc....

Dust mask and goggles essential.
