Tile drilling

I am fitting a wash basin and i need to drill holes in the tiles to take a 14mm raw plug.I know its best to drill the holes in tiles before fixing to walls.In my case the tiles are already on wall.My question is in this case is it best to use a hole cutter starting of at a angle till it bits then placing it flat on the tile(i have a 15mm hole cutter)or using a tile bit to make a pilot hole then carry on using differant size massonary bits until correct hole size is achived.

Hi Alan, it depends what your tiles are made from.

For normal tiles you can use either a diamond point drill or a masonry drill bit-

drilling tiles

If the tiles are porcelain, you might need one of these- drilling porcelain tiles

They are Ceramic tiles so i could make the first hole using say a 8mm tile bit then opening it up in steps using masonary bits and make the hole a bit bigger to allow the raw plug to sit clear of the tile.

Yes, that should be fine.

You can even get some large diamond pointed drills, but masonry should work fine on ceramic. Masking tape will help you get it started without slipping and make sure you drill does NOT have hammer action switched on
