Tiling over existing Floor Tiles
My Kitchen and hall have a highly glazed tile which i dont want to lift. Can anyone advise if tiling over tiles in this type of case can be done, how I prepare the old tile and the type of adhesive which is best to use.

alan, do the job properley, use an sds drill with a tile removal attatchment, and self levelling solution afterwards, you won't increase the height of the floor and can be sure of a decent finish afterwards that won't come up. The time it takes you to prepare the old surface as opposed to a strip and prepare is negligible.

m3,
A well stuck down flat tiled surface would be one of the most suitable surfaces to tile on............. Any reason (other than height increase) why it wouldn't?
There is no prep tiling over the old surface (appart from cleaning it), taking up the old tiles first will take much longer.
I would obviously take it up if the height increase was an issue in any way

We had a very solid terazzo tiled floor that had degraded was stained, getting it up would have been a real problem and it was beyond repair.
I tiled with an adhesive specifially desigend for over tiling and 3 years later it is still fine. The adhesive was a lot finer and you didn't apply it thickly. I was a doddle. I cannot remember the name of the adhesive, if I remember it I will post it.

maybe i'm just old school handyman, and would prefer to tile on the original substrate , and as you mentioned not raising the height.handyman wrote:m3,
