To finish kitchen revamp;
1) Can you lay stone or ceramic floor tiles on top of old well fastened thermoplastic floor tiles. If so, please recommend adhesive.
2) At entrance point floor in kitchen has slight step down. What is best way to overcome as I want to mate up new tiles to carpet in hall. Kitchen floor is level
Any advice most welcome for a mature DIYer.

It's better to pull them up, in the real world though that isn't always possible.
Or on occassion they are fixed so well it's a nightmare.
So although technically you shouldn't be tiling over them, if they are very well fixed, clean them off chemically then use a polymer modified adhesive such as BAL rapidflex to set the tiles.
Invest in a good spade and get the originals up is best though.

laying tiles

Hi Mudster,
Thanks for your advice.
Will take trade suggestion and know how and will lift off thermoplastic tiles. Understand if I use a non flexible type scraper they should fly of revealing bitumen type adhesive.
Again thanks .
Cheers,

Floor level -does 2mm matter
Post by old sparky »
Have removed old thermoplastic floor tiles. However now have different level of about 2mm as screed not originally tiled under washing machine and had been levelled to plastic floor tile, therefore slight step up now tiles removed.
Is this difference significant when laying new ceramic flloor tiles as not sure amount of adhesive applied prior to laying tiles. Don`t want tiles under washing machine to loosen as final depth of adhesive will be 2mm less.
Cheers.
