hi all,
i need a bit of assistance in understanding the colouring of the wires and where they need to go. the instructions i have don't account for the colours i have.
coming directly off the pole a black cable seems to come into my flat and there is no box on the end. a bt engineer gave me the new box but the cable has 3 yellow wires, 1 black, 1 green, 1 white and an orange. which is which and what goes into what numbers please. numerous hours of web trawling haven't given me answers
wiring a NTE5 box, help needed

Hi Monk, and Welcome.
Not sure why the BT guy just 'gave' you the box, is it a BT Master socket? One where it has a split front, if so, it should be installed by BT.
Do you have a telephone line that is connected at the moment?
The two wires you need to connect to the A and B terminals in the back of the master are the Orange and White, either way round does not usually matter. The yellows are just strengtheners and the other pair are for a second line if you ever need one.

Just a point, Monk, if there was nothing connected to the wires, it will probably be disconnected at the exchange also.
I mentioned this so that if the line is dead when you put the two wires to the terminals and plug a phone in to try it, it will not mean that you have got the wrong wires connected.
It may have been disconnected when the last occupant left the flat and the might have taken the old master socket for some unknown reason.

the whole set up of this flat is somewhat odd. when i phoned bt they said there were 3 active lines registered to this address, where i informed them that if that was the case why would i be ringing. i know my landlords computer repair business is regestered as 1-2, where as my flat is num 1. i asked him and he says there shouldn't be anything registered here that is pertinent to the business. we will soon see. thanks again dave
