Asking for help

Post by RichieP »

There several threads on here where people have asked for help with computer issues and haven't bothered to reply. A few people have replied with different suggestions.

I'd like to suggest a couple of things:

1. Only one person helps at a time to prevent confusion for the OP. Once they've exhausted ideas, others chip in.

2. Those asking for help at least have the courtesy to reply to those offering help.

Don't think "1" would work, but I know what you mean.

"2" Should be a sticky in every forum, a thank you goes a long way.

Perhaps you could have an adjudicator that's computer literate to keep it tidy/sane.

Especially those ones where it's obvious the OP isn't going to reply but they still add more suggestions 6 months later.

I can always lock them after 1 month the same as I have been doing the main forums, or should that say someone can lock them

Yeah, fair enough. Just don't get on as often anymore.

There are so many 'Unknows' about computers resulting in what may appear to be two identical problems being caused by two completely different circumstances. This can lead to one person giving advice which has worked to cure the problem previously, but not working this time. Someone else may know of a different cure that may work and so they post it in the thread to offer alternative help. This means that Richie's No 1 would not really work.

As for Thanks, I am not bothered but I do wish people would post back if advice has been successful. Because some problems cannot be replicated on ones own computers and suggestions for a cure may be a little 'guess work' as to which program to try first, it is nice to know which recommendation worked to cure the problem. That way it helps for future reference which to advice first.
If a suggestion does not work, we can untick it from the list for that particular problem.

Also, as there are several things to do to completely remove some trojans or viruses, it is best to only put part of the operation in a post to start with otherwise some peple jump to the last item on the list to get it over with , and by missing out an operation the cleanup becomes futile, and others reading the thread later would think I didn't know what I was on about. So when the first part of the operation is complete I like people to post back (I ask them to) so that we can get on with the next part.

My view is:
I feel that sometimes multiple angles work better than one, sometimes different perspectives make a situation a lot clearer. So 1 might be counter productive.
Also helps when people say whether it worked or not as sometimes there is more than 1 way to crack a nut......especially certain annoying malware.
