time to stick one of many many c'ck ups in here i think

did a 1st floor extension few years back... take an existing kitchen up to 1st floor, bedroom above, knock through etc...
had it roofed over, timber window in, waiting on glass units, sheet of dpm over the window, mid november.. knock through was from an existing bathroom which was to become the ensuite so the door to the bathroom was left on...
rads off but the valves are on and is staying in the same position.. ready for a through skim..
fully pumped vented 'gravity' c/h system...

i didnt know at the time what a frostguard setting actually did.... i thought it was off, it was one of those with the pull down pins to turn it to zero..

must have been around 5am when it got real cold and pop goes the trv

customer gets up around 7am to find his house flooded...
it was in the coving, the studwalls, wrecked the kitchen ceiling, most of the downstairs carpets, not a happy chappy....

header tanks should be BANNED!!!

You would be surprised how many times this happens to people, it is very common!

Decorators are the worst offenders.

The number of times I've told them the TRVs will open below 5deg ish, and to make sure they button the rad up before they go.

Do they listen, do they hell.

its the little asterix thats the frostguard, its just that some of em need you to pull a little plastic pin to get it to turn past this down to 0...

ever since then, if there is the slightest doubt as to the trv's integrity (cos they have a horrible habit of leaking) i use a flexi tap connector with an iso valve attached... (just cos its a rubber washer and ive usually got one kicking around the back of the van).. go on hand tight and let you sleep that night safe in the knowledge the phone aint gonna go at 5 in the morning
