Granite tiles on concrete basement kitchen floor

Post by malc_p »

Hi all
First post so be gentle with me - and yes I have done a search but nothing quite matches this query!
I live in a basement flat, about 160 years old. The kitchen floor consists of a fairly recent (I mean maybe 30 or 40 years old) concrete layer, about 1/2" thick, on the original brick floor (this room was originally the sculleries/wet rooms for what started life as a typical 5-floor Victorian seaside town house) and obviously under the brick there is no DPC.
We had vinyl down for the last 5 years or so and when we took it up it was fairly black & mouldy!
Anyway, we're doing the place up and have got ourselves some 30X30 black "galaxy" granite tiles for this room, so the question is: what preparation will we need to do, what is the best cement to use (and anything else anyone can suggest that may be useful to me).
Any and all help gratefully received.

Your best bet here is to speak to a proffesional tile adhesive manufacturer like Ardex. They can give you details of a liquid Damp proof membrane that gets trowel onto the floor before tiling the floor
