If it's XP, right-click My Computer, then Properties.

Click the Hardware tab, then Device Manager.

Do you have any yellow question marks or exclamation marks?

Is you sound settings defaulting to the speakers and not the headphone jack

On XP its START->CONTROL PANEL ->SOUNDS AND AUDIO DEVICES->AUDIO tab->ADVANCED BUTTON (under Sound Playback)

ensure the Speaker set up is set to speakers (e.g. 5.1 Sound Sound) and not "No Speakers" or "Headphone"

Although most systems now have their oen software assoiated with your hardware, so you may want to check there also.

Quite possibly if your sound is on a separate card and not on the mother board. Try an update driver on those exclamation marks. Right click and go to properties. Allow it to connect to the Internet.

If you know what the sound card is, go to the website and download the driver for it.

Also, are you plugging the speaker jack into the green one rather than the blue?
