putting the straight-edge baton on the wall before tiling

Hi

I am tiling a small splash back and this is my first tiling project.

I know I have to start with a straight (horizontal) edge by fixing a baton to the wall. The baton is always shown on the videos but it already fixed on the wall and they don't show you how to do it!

I am having trouble getting it absolutely horizontal as it seems you need six pairs of hands to hold everything (baton, screwdriver, spirit-level etc) when you screw the baton to the wall.

Has anybody got any tips?

I use a masonry nail tapped in half way. Draw a line with a spirit level and fix one end of the batten using a nail. Line it up and tap the other end in. If necessary tap another in the middle.

When you are done pull the nails out with a claw hammer resting on the batten and not the new tiles

another tip when tilling is dont assume the bath is level
the batton should be set at a level to allow 1/3 to 2/3 off a full tile above the bath this is assuming you have to cut a row above the bath rather than tuck in behind the bath

the reason for this is its impossible to cut less than around 10mm from a tile easily
