gas barbecue help please

Post by TINAMIC »

We bought a gas barbecue from Argos but where the pipes from the burner attach to the gas pipe doesn't seem a very good connection & there are vents in the pipes from the burner . I'm worried about trying it out as I think the gas will escape from the vents & the loose fitting.
Surely it's not supposed to be like that. I'm thinking of taking it back but its my sons birthdasy & we were having the barbecue for him & friends.

Why not connect it up and then test the connection with some washing up liquid mixed with water, if there is gas escaping it will bubble

If its possible, just check any connections are tight with a spanner etc, and jubilee clips are tight.

Then check with a weak washing up liquid solution sprayed on, you will see if it leaks, just like fixing your bicycle puncture when you were ten!

Hope you got it sorted intime for the big event! 8-)

Hitch, would any of the connections be left hand threaded like acetylene, is so try and tighten the other way, oh you can turn the gas on without lighting it, you should smell it, if not hear it.

That my friend is a very good point, any flammable gas threads should be left handed. So you would turn them anticlockwise to tighten.

my gas barbi is the same, the pipes that go to the burner first are connected to a coller thats loose fitting with vents cut in. It works fine.......as if it wants to mix air in it or something

mine sounds the same aswell the pipes fit loosely into a collar and have slits down them, they are not meant to be sealed on my model!

Quite right boys, the gaps are after the burner injectors, but before the burner itself.

The injectors speed up the gas which causes air to be sucked in, creating a pre-aerated pre mix buner.

As Hitch says, just like a bunsen burner, with the hole a nice clean burning powerful flame. Without a hole, it'd be a floppy yellow flame, would make your steak sooty!
