Kitchen worktop replacement/repair

Has anyone any ideas on how to replace or repair kitchen work surfaces (cheaply)?
Ideally I want to do this myself but don't have the facilities to cut/shape new tops.
I know that sticky back plastic will bubble with heat etc but is there a more robust covering available? Also I'd like to have a neat finished on the edges.

Hi Johnev,

Does the worktop in question have a rolled edge?

If it is square edged, you could re-formica the whole thing providing there isn't a sink cutout.

It would be a lot easier to replace the whole thing.

Have you got pictures of it you could post?

as you dont have a router you are limited to covering the area with chopping board large tile decorative cut and edged sheet metal
with the metal sheet have it all round the cooker to even out the the area thats assuming its close to the cooker

The kitchen is quite small and yes the tops have square edges - also the sink fits on all straight edges.
So I will certainly investigate formica.
