Sounds like your hard drive has died.

How long have you had the computer?

You could always try to fix it. Got nothing to lose have you?

Have a look underneath. There are usually a few small covers. One will be for the hard drive. Unscrew them and see if you can find it.

What make is it?

New harddrive for it will cost about £100. It might be the harddrive is only blank due to wiping software.

If your mate found it dumped, it could be stolen. Wiping software will trash data on the HD if you try and login to many times without the correct username and password. It's to protect sensitive data.

Reformatting, and reinstalling an operating system may work.

Gold-plated?

80Gb laptop hard drives are less than £50.

Yes Gold Plated! Nothing but the best. I assume the key lettering on the keyboard is all done using Diamonds, and the laptop case is guilded in silver?
