If you decide to remove Norton when your subscription runs out, a couple of things to remember.
1/ If you paid for it as an update using a credit card, ensure that Norton know you will not be renewing otherwise they may take the next subs about two months early and you have one hell of a job getting it back.
2/ Never use the Add/Remove section in the computer Control Panel to uninstall Norton, always use the Norton Removal Tool

This may either help or confuse you about all the free security software going around:
NOW! That‘s What I Call Software. 1.
I use the Comodo Firewall,
Microsoft Security Essentials (not on that list but Google it)
WinPatrol to tell me of anything that is trying to change things on my PC
MBAM
SAS

The reason you can get lots of free programs is that developers who design antivirus and antispyware programs need to always be on the alert for new threats to write new definitions to protect computers. The more free copies there are about the better their chances of getting the earliest possible warnings of new threats. That way they can write up protection for all the professional versions that they have sold to companies throughout the world, as well as giving us the chance to update our free versions.

The main difference between the two is that all paid-for versions get their updates automatically but at one time all free versions had to be updated manually. That is changing now as more and more offer auto-updates.
The other difference that you may see if you do a comparrison is that the pro-versions have a lot more to offer in the way of extra protection, that the free ones don't cover. If you look at this page:

the items marked with a * are what the pro version offers above what you get in the free version.
