Right, as title says, thicko here wants to make a redundant pc into a server.
I have put in a new HD and need more memory, but apart from this what do I need to do?
Is it just a case of buying a server operating system and a switch box thingy?

You can always tell a Yorkshireman,
But you cannot tell him much.
But you cannot tell him much.

Scroll down a little for the instructions.
Dave, remember to get a RAID card with the same connections as the HD you have bought, SATA or IDE, and you really want a second , matching HD to one you have just bought.

If you just want to use it for file storage, you could turn it into a dedicated Network Attached Storage (NAS) device using FreeNAS
You won't need to worry about upgrading memory as the operating system exists just to maintain the file system and shares.[/url]
