Do you get anything on the screen, or is it completely black? Can you see any sign of the backlight working? If the external monitor connection is working, then I'd say it's either the connection to the laptop screen, or the laptop screen itself. LCD displays work by allowing light from the backlight to pass through crystals, so maybe whatever controls that has broken.

As you say, sounds like there's a problem with the connection to the screen. Either the connector, or maybe the output on the graphics card to the laptop in screen has broken. Either way I dobut it'll be an easy fix.
