Hey everyone
I am looking to make a barbell and some dumbells out of the above alloy.
I have done a fair bit of research and have found the 1144 alloy to be very strong (compared to mild steel).
I cant find it anywhere in the uk, does anyone know of stockest in the uk that would do small quantities e.g. 6m? Or can anyone recommend adifferent type of steel product, that would suit the job?
Thanks for taking the time to read this post

I would guess thats not a European standard number, American probably.
Looking it up, strength of 115,000psi is pretty hard stuff.
That equates to about 80kg/mm2, normal mild steel is about 50kg/mm2.
I suppose you'd want something like EN24...

Cheers Hitch
I had a look at the web site, I have heard that heat treated steel is more likely to snap than bend, just wondered if I should be concerned about dropping the bar with weights attached?
Could anyone point me in the direction of a simple safe working load calculation?
e.g. weights on each end of a bar, while picking it up in the centre.
Cheers for all your help

For the barbell I think you would be better off buying a ready made bar. When you get a couple of hundred pounds on an olympic bar it bends a fair bit.
As you have mentioned heat hardened steel is hard, but is brittle and will not flex.
