Leveling/Tile on Bitumen - TA Levelflex

Post by maximilon »

Hi, about to tile a concrete floor, part of which has bitumen residue from an removed parquet floor.

I have been recommended by reputable local tile shop, TA levelflex, the manufacturers website states:

"For smoothing screeds and a variety of floor surfaces. The high polymer and fibre formulation makes LEVELFLEX the ideal choice for direct foot traffic, light vehicle traffic and can be applied to concrete, asphalt, timber, plywood, chipwood, underfloor heating, old tiles, terrazzo and natural stone. Due to the strength of formulation, LEVELFLEX can be applied to a depth of 50mm in one application. LEVELFLEX is the perfect choice when preparing a substrate to lay wooden block, laminate, ceramic tiles, natural stone, vinyl, parquet, cork, carpet or painting as the final treatment."

Only a DIYer myself but anyone more experienced ever used this product? I have also been told that any bitumen that is left to throw dry adhesive powder on to it then trowel it in when applying the wet flexible adhesive?

Any thoughts appreciated?

nevr used the product.

Assuming it's ony a very thin film of bitumen, I would have thought a good flexable adhesive will get you out the sh*t.

If the bitumen is thick, scrape it off first.

You can clean the bitumen prperly with petrol first too as another option.

Throw some dry mix on it........and brush all over.

Then use a flexible powdered adhesive :thumbright:

you really want to lift as much as possible.
a 2part slc would do to cover it or i prefer to use a slurry coat over any bitumen thats left on floor.
if any ufh is going down you WILL NEED TO LIFT THE LOT..
slurry coat= cement and sbr.. 2:1

Put the the levelflex down at the weekend, never used slc before but this was so easy to use, was only a thin film of bitumen left - looks like its down to stay.

Only feathered out onto the bitumen, so will try putting down some dry powder before i tile with a flex adhesive.

Thanks.
