How to recover stuff from a rebooting Windows PC

Post by swarfendor437 »

For future ref and least hassle:

1. Download PCLinux OS 2009.2 KDE from here:http://pclinuxos.com/?page_id=180

2. Burn the downloaded image with Image Burn from here: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

3. If you don't have 2 optical burners now is the time to invest in a mains-free external DVD-RW - gets its power from utilising 2 free USB 2.0 ports.

4. Place PCLinux OS 2009.2 KDE in machine's optical drive: enter BIOS at boot to change from boot sequence of Hard Drive to CD. Press F10 to save and exit once changes made.

5. Reboot with PCLinux OS in machines optical drive (make sure external DVD-RW present)

6. The only thing you will be asked for during boot is keyboard layout - change from default US to UK.

7. After some whirring you will get Log in screen - the whole system is operatinig in RAM - Minimum requirements are a machine with 128 Mb of Ram.

8. Press Alt +F2 to get a 'Run' like dialog box and Enter 'K3b' without the quotes.

9. In the top left window scroll down till you get to 'ROOT' - expand this and click on 'mnt' to get to sda1 - this should be the partition with windows on.

10. double click on sda1 and you should see all of your system drive's folders.

11. go to Documents and Settings/your user name - then simply drag and drop 'My Documents' into bottom left pane of K3b - burn and back up your data to CD or DVD dependent on how much stuff you have got on there.

Best regards

Hi liqroof,

Do you get the Windows logo then when you think it is going to go to the logon screen it reboots? It could be a corrupt Boot record - have you tried hitting F8 (Function key at top of Keyboard) to 'Boot from last known good configuration'?
