Carpet gripper rods

Post by cmbreid »

Hello from an elderly newbie.
I am renovating a room which will have quite deep radiators under the bay windows. It seems sensible to nail the gripper rods in place before the rads are installed. How much gap should I leave between the rods and the wall?
Thanks for any advice.

HI Cynthia,

welcome to the foum.

Gripper rods are normally about half to three quarters of an inch away from the skirting board, so that the cut edge of the carpet can be turned back on itself.

Hope this helps

Thanks very much - I would have put them too close (didn't realise the carpet is doubled back!). I will get the pipe positions first, so I can leave spaces for them.

Leave the gripper up and tell the heating engineer, he'll be happy to fit them after the pipes for you, better than skinless knuckles from the gripper!!!! ::b 'orrible stuff, but very useful.

The Brother in law has it on the top of his fence. It stops kids climing over and cats getting in his garden as well

I have to disagree on the spacing advice. Gripper strip is usually fixed leaving a about a 6mm gap. Fitted carpet is cut to the skirting board and after stretching with the knee kicker thing the cut edge is pushed down into the gap with a bolster like tool to give a clean finish edge.

Carpet fitters usually do all this, and know how to get around tight fits, so unless you are doing it yourself then I should not worry.

yes I am with dwd on this one

having said that most carpet fitters will also fit the grippers in seconds so I would leave it to the fitter.

Horrible things grippers :cb
