Radiator Renovation

Post by Eve »

Could someone advise me on how to strip varnish/staining from a wooden radiator cover? And then tell me, step by step, what I need to do to eventually be able to gloss it?

Thanks

Welcome Eve,
No need to strip it if you are going to paint it.

Check it closely for any lumps, runs and dips, knocks.

If it's completely clean of the above then, you just need to sand the varnish lightly with a 200 grade sandpaper to scratch the varnish.

Sand all over and wipe down with a cloth wet (damp that is) with white spirit turpentine, which will remove the fine dust. Allow to dry then paint.

First cost should be an undercoat or pre-coat then finish with gloss although the 'fashion' is now to use eggshell.

If you need anything else just ask.

I don't know? We've never met :-P

Yes you can, the sheets should cut down into thirds and fit the sander pad, assuming its a rectangular pad. Might be Velcro hooks then the pads will have loops stuck on the back.

Have you inspected the cover? Is it clean of runs etc. When you paint it anything like that will be more obvious so if you miss them you can catch them at undercoat stage.
