Bad tiling work

Just had some tiling work done on my 'new' bathroom. Decided to call in a pro tiler, as tiling is something im proven to be crap at. Basically, he quoted £400 to do the job, with me supplying all the tiles/adhesives/silicon/grout/finishing strips etc. The other quote I got was £550, but there were two of them and they said it would take two days. This guy quoted four. I would have gone with the £550 quote, as they were recomended but the Mrs pointed out we were over budget, and she was paying!

I'll post some photos in due course, but I aint happy! We have a feature up two walls, using floor tiles and natural stone borders to frame our chrome towel rad on one wall, the other being opposite rising up to ceiling level above the bath. The joints dont line up on the horizontals, and there are plenty of slightly crooked tiles to boot. This is repeated throughout the job.

The floor tiles are not level, he forgot to fit the chrome finishing threshold strip and left the tiles with sharp edges on - just right for my three year old to cut her feet on. I also asked him to seal everything once grouted with silicone (floor tiles to wall tiles/around shower etc). We now have white silicon flowing nicely up the silver grey grout in the floor tiles, silicon applied over lumps of tile adhesive which he left stuck to the walls and silicin applied directly over old silicon/grout/adhesive which he couldnt be bothered to clean off the side of the bath.

As opposed to using batten to start off rows of tiles, he used screws under each tile, even though I offerred to give him as much batten as he needed but what REALLY took the biscuit is the way for FIVE days, not only did he make no attempt to clear up his crap/tools etc before knocking off at 4.30pm but he also left his sandwich crusts lying around upstairs along with his empty crisp packets and drinks cans. I almost forgot as well, due to the fact he laid the floor tiles late in the day, as opposed to early in the day we had no toilet overnight as I couldnt refit it!

It isn't the fact that he didn't start tiling off of a batten that made his work crap. Thats his bad setting out and being able to work level and plumb. being an untidy worker and generally not very good by the sounds of it.

I rarely use batten. I start off of the floor and work to a line with my lazer. Pack each tile off of the floor to that level line.

looks like the adhesive had blown prior to application..thats very poor workmanship,surprised it held in place especially in the bathroom

Some more bad tiling finishes........ok for me, I get payed to fix it

Job actually looked ok, apart from the radiator fit and my constant pet hate from apparant 'pro tilers'........... grout in corners of joining walls/floors. (always ends in cracked grout/nice hairline crack, but looks ok when they get their money and leave)

i agree, can't understand why pople put grout in the corner like that. Guess it looks neater initially as you say

they do it because you have to grout on day, let it dry, then silicon the next (silicon doesnt stick to wet grout) and you also need to get the correct coloured silicon. You need to have this organised and account for a few extra hours of work....................hence it doesnt happen very often

What is the best way to tile around rad pipes like that?

Drain down, cap off, drill hole into tile and slide over pipe. Then re-instate. How many tilers can do that!!??? hence why he slotted it.

theres no excuse for slotting the tiles, it was a full rip out. You should give the customer the option to pay more to have it done correctly, or pay less and have tile slotted.

Full rip out....they got full rip off pmsl.......Geeze I am on the ball tonight.

call me old fashioned but they should have had the option to come out of the wall in chrome. How much longer would that have taken when you bear in mind that they should have drained it down anyway.
