Hello,
I have been removing old ceramic tiles from my kitchen floor as many were cracked and I plan to replace with Vinyl Sheet flooring or Vinyl Tiles.
Strangely, I have been able to remove about 75% of the tiles by hand alone, no tools required. They just lifted straight off the floor, with the adhesive just crumbling away as I pulled them up fairly cleanly. Its as if they were not stuck down at all, which is probably why so many were cracked. Underneath the tiles was a wooden based floor (like sheets of wood, not floorboards).
This is a first floor flat built in 2001. I think this is the original flooring and was done super-cheaply by the developer.
However, the remaining tiles seem to be stuck down in a different way and I can't seem to remove them with ease like I did the others. They leave behind a lot more adhesive etc. What can I do to remove these stubborn tiles? What tools/products should I get?
Also, what would I have to do to prepare the floor before laying new vinyl?
Many Thanks
Darren

are the tiles fixed onto wbp ply thats been overboarded onto the orginal subsrate..if so lift the lot with hammer/crowbar...
if not onto ply o/board, hammer bolster..
wet any adhesive left on,leave for a bit then scrape off with heavy duty scraper any bits not coming of..dust mask/goggles/gloves..and get a sander onto it.
prep for vinly
overboard with 6mm-9mm wbp ply,screwed every 150mm-200mm
depends on vinyl flooring you go for:self levelling compound(2part latex) over the wbp ply.(f ball..stopgap range)
a contact adhesive will be needed check with vinyl manufacturers.
i use f ball products for any vinly i put down(altro saftey flooring)mainly.
