Suggest a compact computer

Post by Mooncat »

I've decided to pension off my Dell Optiplex XL575, Win95 Pentium 90 with 32Meg RAM as it can't do USB. So I'm thinking of a compact unit, Atom?. I have all peripherals needed, laptops no good to me, as they seem to go obsolete in months. Modest price essential, but useful for some other purpose later on. No software needed.
I started out with nothing, I still have most of it.

Try the Asus range of EEEBox PCs.

If you're after a 'small' PC and not particularly bothered about high-end graphics you can't get much smaller.

They can be bought pre-loaded with Windows, Linux or OS-free.

The CD (genuine) or the whole caboodle?

the Asus Eeebox PC EB1501 is in short supply, so bargains are unlikely, so I might go for a refurbished PC instead.

I've had 2 computers off thee guys.
One new and one referb no problems with either. You could be looking at as little as £50 for just the base unit.

The whole caboodle.

My win 95 second addition has expired and I need a replacement for a few progs that I can't update, and they don't work on xp.

Windows 95 has expired now (not just your copy). Getting a new (Old) CD won't help. Microsoft have long since stopped supporting it and later versions of windows such as widows 98.
Of course if you wipe your HDD and re-install it'll all work like it did in 1995 but loads of newer things won't work with it. The internet for starters.

95 works fine on the internet.

I have loads of manuals etc that won't work on xp, as well as an AGA photo scanner that won't work on xp.

That is the idea, it will work just as it should in 95. :thumbright: I only want to read and transfer files.

'Manuals' that won't work???? Most manuals that I know/have are simple pdf files. What's different about yours?

Just curious....

The interactive discs they're on is not compatible with newer systems.

The same applies to the AGFA e50 scanner, you can't get a driver for anything newer than 98se.

Yes it will connect to the internet but some (more and more as time goes on) websites will not display correctly. A lesser, but increasing ammount of websites will not display at all.
The problem here is not windows itsself but internet explorer being an old version and newer versions that work with windows 95 not being available. Alternatives such as mozilla or google chrome will be the same.

Yes I know what you're saying but I don't want it for the internet, but, merely as a tool to transfer files to the main computer, which is what I used the old one for, before the MB went tits up.
