Tiling on Floor Boards - PLy or not to Ply

First post so please be gentle

I am in the process of putting ply overboard on my existing floor boards in my kitchen but on a visit to look for tiles I was advised of this product.....Excel Bond, 2 part flexible rapid set (floor tile adhesive).

Apppartently with this stuff you don't need ply and can tile straight onto the rubber which is created by the product above. It works by mixing the "milk "and powered which forms the rubber.

Here's my details. I am tiling a 1.5m x 3.4m floor in my kitchen. I live in an Edinburgh Victorian Tennant with old floor boards which I have screwed down and filled in the spaces/gaps. There is still a little movement in the floorboards but only very slight.

Question is.....does this product or alternative products like this actually work or is using ply the only guaranteed way of success?

Hi there,

Overboard all the way, or even better, remove existing floorbaords and lay down 25mm ply.

as above overboard 15mm wbp ply or lift and replace with 18-22mm wbp ply.
seal the edges and underside of ply with bal sbr(stops moisture ingress).
while your at that check joists and strengthen with more dwangs.
screw down every 150-200mm.

You can put Ditra onto floorboards and tile over. Have used this and never had a problem.

There are other matting products on the market that allow tiling over boards, but I haven't used them so can't say if they work or not.
