tiled onto paint, not keyed, not PVA'd

Hey. just curious because my friend started tiling a kitchen back spash and was half way through before he got me to help, as i have my nvq level 2 in tiling aswell as he does. any way he tiled ontop of paint, never keyed it or PVA'd the wall..... when i tried to tel him to do it for the rest he wouldnt.... so what will happen? the tiles are them sqare 4" wobbly tiles if thts any help. so far they have been up 3 weeks. thanks for reading.

It really depends on how well the paint is bonded to the wall I guess. I tiled onto paint in a bathroom back in the 70's and never had a tile come loose. PVA is not really a good sealer under tiles as it is water based and it can be reactivated by moisture causing failure.
Time will tell in you mates case but he has a good chance that they will stay on I think.

ok, what would be better to use rather than PVA? and how would he know if the Paint is well bonded? he did have to take 4 tiles off the wall because of a mistake this was a day later and wen he pulled them off it pulled the paint off a little bit... does that make any difference to what you said erlier. thanks.

to check how good the paint (emulsion) is bonded to any wall...

gas tape/insullation tape/cellotape..ok

cut into strips and place one of the named above on the walls top/middle/bottom..leave on for 5-10 min then peel tape off.
if paint(emulsion)stays on wall just key it with a stanley blade.(well bonded)
if paint comes of onto tape not well bonded get it off..

as for pva thats an ..NO..NO..
size of tiles 4",take it you used a tubbed addy,then if its a good brand tub it will already have an acrylic primer in it....

but you 2 to being svq/nvq tile fixers should already know all that...

Tictic.........don't forget they give NVQ's away nowadays. very hard to fail them even if you have poor attendance and ability.

Was listening to NVQ assessor a few months back on talk radio......shocking.

thanks for the info. and actually only 5 people passed our NVQ course it was quite strict because the courses before that the tutors got the sack for passing idiots. Another thing is we did no theory it was all practical so im quite good at tiling BUT just need to learn the theory part of it which im currently learning on he Doploma tiling course :) any ways thanks for the tips.

not havin a pop ere bud..
but to be a very good tile fixer,its not just about fixing tiles to walls/floors mate(anybody can do that

)
it more to do with "the theory"..subtrate preperation....
types of plaster..what you need to prime it with..
weight limits of walls..
weight of tiles per m2..
what tile adhesive to use..
what grout to use..
conctrete/screed/timber floor..
what and how to prime conctrete/screed floor..
overboarding timber floor etc..the list is endless..

stick at it bud..and ask all the questions you need to your tutors and on here to mate...everyday is a schoolday..

i am 20 odd years in this trade and still learning mate..

well i know about all the weights and that its just a few things im stuck on and yeh like they say your learning throughout your whole life so i dont expect to be great straight away but i no im not a bad tiler BUT at the same time i know i can get better aswell lol thanks though it gives me some more stuff to ask the tutors about.
