Re: How to check your broadband speed.
Someone very near me with talk talk is getting 2.38mb.
All the different companys seem low I have to say (in the 2 mb's) , except for virgin which one is at 18.91mb! I can't even imagine how fast that woulod be!
I can't think why mine is so bad. New computer, Vista, on a normal line modem

Re: How to check your broadband speed.
John,
They are the results of probably just one speed test that some people have done and then entered their postcode so the company can pinpoint where the computer is (roughly).
As you are on a cable connection rather than landline, The speed at the street side cabinet should be very similar for the whole area, because of fibre optics, so the drop in speed at different computers could be down to individual connections at the houses.
Either bad cable connections, or poor equipment could be the cause. Also, there is no time or date on the other tests so the poor ones may have been taken when Virgin were throttling back the downloads at a particular time or at a particular address because of overloading previously. And the really fast ones may have been taken at about 3am when there is very little demand on the lines.

Freeway,
My last post to John offers some reasons for a big difference in speeds in a small area but, as I posted previously, get onto yourt ISP and DEMAND some answers.
Do you pay line rental to BT? If so contact them too, and ask them to check over your line.

You can always tell a Yorkshireman,
But you cannot tell him much.
But you cannot tell him much.

Re: How to check your broadband speed.
I have just run both checkers and they each returned a download speed of 5.11Mb/s.
Not sure why they were giving differing readings for you. Did you select the London test centre, because that one was giving the most accurate results when tested by Virgin Media.

Re: How to check your broadband speed.
Wine-o already did that one and it's still just as bad.
Scruff you'll have posted before you've even thought of what to type with speeds like that!
I'd love to have tested when I had dial up.
