Mac bootup

Post by Hitch »

Mac junk...
The mrs has got a used Mac courtesy of a school.

Shes just tried booting it up.
We get a grey screen, with a flashing file (with a smiley face) and flashing question mark.

We tried again, holding the option button, got a screen with a circular arrow and a right arrow.
Then it went to a 'DOS??' type screen, where it says Invalid memory access at
SRR0:ff846380
SRR1:f00003030

My guess is its rubbish :dunno:

Sounds like a screen saver or or a bug.

Is there anything else on the screen Hitch.

Have you tried clicking on anything, or pressing enter, or esc.

file folder with question mark in it means it cant find the os ie. it cant find a boot device have you tried to boot it with the os x cd/dvd ??

holding the key down with allow you to boot another device box with an arrow in it.

mac's are a different ball game compared to pc's for fault finding

the fault could be a number of things from a duff hdd to the drive controller on the logic board whats fubar'd.

if you want to have a go at fixing it goto www.ifixit.com and find the correct guide for the model (would of help if you posted what mac it was tbh)

I will have to get me a CD and try that.

As for what mac it is....cant find anything more on it than eMAC.
I know nothing else :dunno:

Came from a posh school, they regularly upgrade to the latest, so this one was surplus. I'm told nothing has been done to it, such as the hd being wiped or anything like that.

Okay an update....

I met up with someone who kindly loaned me some discs. Tried lots of butons, but it just spits the cd tray out again.

Now, starting up with the alt key (to show which OS is installed), it just shows a refresh key and a righthand arrow..... so we have now come to the conclusion it has no OS installed....?

Where from here, she's thinking of installing linux.....download from, or get a set of discs....?

Mac :bs:

Okay, update.

I have got hold of an OSx disc.
Tried that, just spits it out without doing anything diferent.
Pressing the alt button, to display the current OSs, we just get a refresh icon and an arrow ucub.
The Mrs has sugested it has no OS currently installed....?
