Uneven coloured grout

Post by sanitygone »

Last year we had our kitchen floor tiled and the grout lines were uneven so the contractor topped up the grout to make it level. The grout is grey and is darker where it was topped up making it look grubby. We’ve tried numerous things to try and get the colour even with no success. Is there a dye or something similar we can use to darken the whole lot hopefully making it an even colour?
Thank you very much everyone for all your advice.

As said, the only way to go is to rake out the old grout and redo.

You might be lucky........if he has used a crap make for the grouting, it may well just scrape out with a stanley knife. Some of the worse makes are very very sandy.

Thanks for the replies. I was hoping to try a simple solution to the colour problem before raking out the grout and doing it again. I think it is an exterior grout and it looks like it’s possibly cement based.

If the grout is sound and you dont want to rake it out, you could re-colour it with Aquamix Grout Colourant.

Thanks Rookery that was the sort of thing I was thinking of as the grout is perfectly sound and I'm worried we'll damage the tiles if we attempt to rake it out. Can Aquamix grout colorant be bought in any DIY shop?
