tile trim

Is there any kind of trim that can be fitted over existing tile edges, such as round a window?

There's usually a selection of upvc edge trims available at B&Q and the like. Perhaps an angle bead.

Decorated a kitchen last year, someone else had done the tiling and hadn't used tile bead, just the usual fingerful of grout run along the edges - looked awful and from decorating point of view no specific straight edge to work to.

Carefully raked back the grout and managed to get a groove a couple of mil deep behind the tiles, got normal tile bead and trimmed back the lip so it just fitted behind the tiles and then fixed with Gripfil - still there a year later. Have done this a few times since with good results, unconventional but makes a much better looking job.

I get really pi**ed off when folk don't use trim.

If tiles are not full height up walls then you don't need a tile trim. It is how you finish that determines what looks good/bad, leaves a good/bad edge for decorating.

Certainly shouldn't be running a grout line along the top with a finger, just as you shouldn't run silicone or caulking along the top with a finger.

Tooled caulk or silicone joint, back of tiles infilled with flush grout joint all make for acceptable finish to paint to.
